What are Allergies and Allergens?

Allergies are an over-reaction of the body's immune system to a specific component, usually a protein. Proteins may be from foods, pollens, house dust, animal hair or molds and are known as allergens.

Food Intolerance on the other hand is a pharmacological reaction experienced after eating or drinking. Food intolerance has been associated with asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome.

What are the symptoms?

Some of the Symptoms of Food Allergy are:

Runny nose,

Skin rashes, eczema, hives,

Nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea and cramps,

Trouble with breathing,

Itching or burning sensation around the mouth,

Anaphylactic shock.

and some of the Food Intolerance Symptoms are:

Sweating,

Palpitations,

Rapid breathing,

Headache, migraine,

Burning sensations,

Asthma,

Allergy type reactions,

Tremors and nervousness.

You can see that a number of these symptoms are very similar whether caused by allergic reaction or food intolerance.

Can these reactions be serious?

Anaphylaxis is an allergic reaction that requires urgent medical attention. Within minutes of exposure to the allergen, the airways can swell causing suffocation. To prevent serious injury or death, will often require an adrenalin injection.

Peanuts, eggs, milk, sesame, shellfish, and MSG, along with bee pollen are common anaphylactic allergans. Some insect bites and medications can be also.

If your child suffers from these types of reactions it is very important to use Safety Labels and Emergency Wristbands to remove or reduce the chances of accidental reactions.

It is recommended to see a health professional who can help with treatments. Many of these types of disorders can benefit greatly from natural therapies.

Food sensitivity testing is now widely available, as are other allergy tests, that can be done at home, and the results can give the practitioner a clearer picture of herbal or homeopathic remedies that may be suitable.

Most of the treatments used are based on Prevention and removal of the source of the allergy, a number of suitable products for this can be seen by clicking on the banner below.
