There are many types of common food allergies with milk being on the top of the list.
A milk allergy is usually due to a reaction to something in cow’s milk.
There are 3 main parts to cow’s milk that can cause problems for a person with a milk allergy.
These would be the lactose sugar found in milk, as well as the whey and casein proteins.
When a person is lacking the enzyme known as lactase, they can have a reaction from the lactose sugar which is called being lactose intolerant.
This can cause a great deal of problems for both adults and children, if they try to eat or drink anything that contains milk or milk byproducts.
It is said that the lactose intolerance is mainly seen in adults, but it can be found in children as well. Since there are substitutes for cow’s milk such as goat’s milk, the components and make up of the milk may be different, making it possible for a person with a cow milk allergy to drink other types of milk.
If you suffer with a milk allergy then it is best for you to talk with an allergist to see just how bad your allergy is, and what types of substitute milks that you can have, without causing any reactions.
Many doctors will tell a woman who breast feeds, that what they eat or drink should not have an effect on the baby, in terms of the baby getting gas, or having a reaction to certain foods the mother eats.
Recent studies show that it really does matter what a woman eats, and if the baby is prone to being lactose intolerant, and the mother eats or drinks something with milk or milk byproducts in it, the baby may suffer with colic symptoms, having intense gas and diarrhea.
If you find that your baby is more fussy after breast feeding, and seems to have more gassy issues after feeding, then you may want to take a look at your diet.
You will find that your baby will feel much better if you watch what you eat and take care of yourself.
Some of the symptoms to watch out for that can tell you if you suffer with a milk allergy are: hives, bloating, cramping, eczema, diarrhea and even chronic congestion.
If you find that you are displaying some of these symptoms, then you should seek the advice of an allergy specialist.
There are tests that can be done to pinpoint exactly what your allergies are, such as blood tests and scratch tests.
For many allergies, there are shots that you can get as well as medications that you can take, which will help you to build up a tolerance to certain allergies. But unfortunately, the only real treatment for food allergies is avoidance.
If your milk allergy is from being lactose intolerant, then there are acidophilus products that you can take which help to put back the missing enzyme, which causes you to be lactose intolerant.
If you are breast feeling and you have a milk allergy, then you will want to check with your doctor as to supplements that you can take, so that you are getting the proper nutrition that is needed for breast feeding your baby.
