Dog Allergies

A dog is man’s best friend. You decide!
The subject Dog Allergies falls into two parts. People who are allergic to dogs, and dogs who are allergic to something in their environment or in their food.
Which is more common? Dog Allergy or Cat Allergy?
People suffering from dog allergies are relatively common, but not nearly as common as people who are allergic to cats.
Cat Allergies are much more common perhaps, because dogs are generally bathed more often, and because the main dog allergen, called Can f1, is mostly found in dog saliva, whereas the cat allergen is mostly found on the skin and in the air.
It has recently been shown, that infants in families who own dogs, are less likely to wheeze, due to endotoxin, a protein released by farm animals and dogs, that affects the immune system, and protects against the development of allergies. However, this endotoxin can also worsen allergies and asthma in those who already have the allergy or asthma. You decide!
So if you are allergic to dogs, what can you do?
The best way to avoid the symptoms of Dog Allergies, is to avoid dogs. If this is not your choice then medications and shots may be a good option. The other things you can do are:
Neuter the dog, this affects the hormones in the dog and the release of the allergens.
Bath the dog regularly, this helps to remove any allergens present on the dog.
Wipe the dog over with a wet cloth daily. These steps will help to reduce your chances of dog allergies.
Keep the dog out of the bed and bedroom. It is best if the dog stays in an uncarpeted area.
Use a HEPA vacuum cleaner regularly and a HEPA room air cleaner, especially for the bedroom.
All these will help in the effort against dog allergies.
Are some breeds better than others?
Maybe! Some people are only allergic to certain breeds of dogs. There are no non allergenic dogs, but there are some breeds that seem to cause fewer allergies. Maybe they do not shed as much, or maybe because they are smaller, generally they don’t salivate as much. These dogs include, Poodles, Schnauzers, Portuguese Water Dog, Wheaten Terriors, Maltese, Lhaso Apso, Yorkshire Terrior, Shih Tzu, Irish Water Spaniel, Kerry Blue Terrior.

What about the dog who is allergic to something?
This usually shows up with a dog who is always scratching and licking itself until sores develop. These sores can become infected and very painful. Sometimes there is associated hair loss.
Regular bathing, with special shampoos, combing and grooming, regular flea treatments, and medications are available in these cases. Some dogs may show allergic reactions to their diet. In this case change to a hypoallergenic diet. It is very easy these days to find suitable diets. There are some suitable products listed in the column on the right hand side.
