Gluten allergy or gluten insensitivity is the medical condition where a person undergoes health problems due to the intake of gluten, a sticky storage protein, which is mostly found in wheat and a few other cereals.
Gluten allergy when neglected may lead to serious complications that can prove fatal. Also medically known as celiac disease, this is quite a common allergy. The severity of the condition may however vary from person to person and also depends upon the amount of gluten based products consumed.
Gluten allergy symptoms

The most common symptoms are the problems in the respiratory tract as it is this system that the gluten primarily affects.
- There can also be excess fatigue even with the slightest consumption of gluten based products.
- Hives are also equally possible with the gluten allergy. The skin develops patches and gives a burning and itching sensation.
- After a specific time of consumption of gluten allergy, there are abdominal cramps that develop.
- Nausea and vomiting sensation are also one of the common gluten or yeast allergy symptoms. This is because the immune system refuses to take in the gluten and fends the food off.
- Breathing disorders and asthma are also common symptoms of gluten allergy. This happens due to the throwing up of the food items into the esophagus until there is an extensive pressure caused in the tracheal space.
- There are also a few cases where the mouth ulcers have been seen due to the gluten allergy.
Overcoming gluten allergy
Here are a few methods of getting over the gluten allergy and its symptoms or preventing it.
You first need to be aware of the various foods that you are allergic to you. Especially the food that contains gluten that causes allergy. For example wheat, rye and barley, etc.
- Make sure you read the labels of all the products that you purchase has the words ‘gluten free’. Biscuits and cookies are carefully to be watched out for.
- As soon as you suspect you are allergic to wheat and other gluten based products or have other food allergies, visit your physician.
- After you are tested for celiac disease you can be sure if you are allergic to gluten or not.
- If you are diagnosed with celiac disease, meet with a dietician and get a gluten free diet prepared so that you can stay away from all the complications.
